New York City is struggling to accommodate more than 30,000 immigrants from Texas and Florida as part of busing programs, prompting Mayor Eric Adams to ask President Biden’s administration for $1 billion in emergency funding.
New York passed the 30,000 mark earlier this month, and on Sunday the number was just over 30,300, City Hall said. New York Post. Of them, the city is actively providing about 21,000 housing units financed by taxpayers. The surge is likely to increase in the coming weeks as the end of Title 42 nears, removing the main tool used by border agencies to deport migrants.
Adams sent the request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is reportedly under review. Adams first declared a state of emergency in October due to the influx of migrants.
Since Adams made his announcement when the population was less than 20,000, the number of immigrants has exceeded 10,000.

Adams’ funding request comes a month after the city’s Independent Budget Office found that New York’s immigrant crisis would cost “at least” $600 million annually until it is resolved. The arrival of an additional 10,000 asylum seekers “could increase costs by approximately $246 million,” the IBO wrote in a November report.

Governors have defended the policy, saying it’s the only way to force incumbents to face the realities of the US-Mexico border crisis.
