“First, love your body,” Austin said. “Do whatever you can. I truly believe in being good. It really comes from within. I love what I do and I feel like I can help women out there feel good about themselves. Work out, eat right, good manners, a good night’s rest all contribute to a healthy lifestyle. I want women to do their best to eat healthy and exercise more. This is my message. I’ve always said, for 40 years, just do your best. That’s the key.”

“Walking is a great form of exercise,” she said. “I try to walk every day. I get in my steps. … If you can walk and pump your arms, you burn more calories because you use more muscles. … But walking is great. I do it in three ways I believe. to stay in shape – cardio to burn fat, toning to strengthen your muscles and then stretching to improve your flexibility… I tell people if they are just starting out [exercise] three days a week. You will see the difference in your body. Make sure you do a little bit at a time. Don’t rush, hurry yourself.”

“I try to work out most days of the week, but I only work out for 30 minutes,” Austin continued. “On holidays, I like to walk and take steps. … I like to exercise in the morning. So I have the whole day and I’m not worried about how I’m going to squeeze it in. Honestly, it depends on your schedule is the best fit. So if you can work out for 10 minutes in the morning and then another 10 minutes in the evening, that’s fine too. If it builds up to about 20-30 minutes most days of the week. You’ll be doing great.. . Start small. Maybe wake up 10 minutes earlier than usual and squeeze in that 10 minutes of exercise in the morning.”

If you need extra encouragement, Austin suggested reaching out to a loved one. He says that working out with a buddy can make exercise more enjoyable for some.

“I always call my sisters and say, ‘Who wants to practice?’ I ask. or “Who’s walking this week?” – he said. “I think you have to plan [your workouts], too. Put it on your schedule, make it part of your plan, so it’s in your notebook, and it becomes part of your life. It’s all about lifestyle. All this helps to lead a healthy lifestyle. So make things more comfortable for you and that’s how you stick it. You will do it often and enjoy it. And music is key. I like interesting music. … My playlist is very diverse. I have music from Drake to Taylor Swift to Bruce Springsteen.”

Austin says the most common mistake people make in the New Year is going overboard “too soon.”

“I think it’s a lot easier to start small and do the little things like walking,” Austin said. “I think sometimes people try to do too much. Then it becomes so complicated that it doesn’t stick; you don’t get consistent and you don’t see a difference. Start with three days a week and build yourself up to four. Make your workouts fun , make it something to look forward to. So you stick with it.”
