A fire call leads to the discovery of a homicide victim in an apartment in Birmingham’s Southside

A homicide investigation is underway after a male was found dead inside a fire during a fire call in Birmingham’s Southside

South Campus officials responded to a fire report in the 1900 block of 15th Avenue South around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

Officers arrived and noticed smoke coming from inside the art unit. Fitzgerald said the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service handled the initial fire call and covered the scene.

Firefighters were notified and there were two men inside the artifact. One of the men was dead.

Officers found evidence that led them to believe the man’s death was a homicide. No additional details are available yet.

Another man was taken into custody at the scene, Fitzgerald said. It is not clear whether the person being taken into custody is a person who is in art with the victim.

The death was one of two murders investigated by police on Tuesday evening.

The second took place in the northern part of the city at 6:15 pm.

Citizens flagged down Birmingham police officers patrolling near the 2900 block of 27th Street North, telling police they had hit a man on the roadway. Authorities later determined that the victim was identified as an adult male and struck by a gunshot.

These are the 112th and 113th homicides in the city so far this year. Of them, 13 are considered unsustainable and therefore not considered criminal.

In all Jefferson County, there have been 189 homicides, including 113 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
