A Georgia corrections officer has died in a shooting at the Gwinnett Correctional Center


Georgia authorities are searching for the man who shot and killed a Gwinnett County corrections officer in a shooting early Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened around 6:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the Gwinnett Correctional Center. FOX 5 Atlanta.

Scott Riner, 59, was found shot to death by officers at the scene.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred during a confrontation with the suspect in the parking lot while Riner was on his way to work. The motive for the shooting is unknown, but police released a video of the suspect on social media.

“The best we can tell at this point is that the victim had some sort of confrontation or interaction with another individual in the parking lot and that individual shot him,” said Gwinnett Police Department Sgt. Jennifer Richter said.

The suspect has not been identified and left the scene on foot.

Riner served about 10 years at the correctional facility, FOX 5 reported. His father and grandfather were described as respected and loved by fellow inmates as well as inmates at the facility.

Capt. Audrey Henderson, who worked with Riner, said, “My prayers are really for his family. I want his family to know that he is our family, and we will get through this together.”

Gwinnett County Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect. Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area of ​​Hurricane Shoals Road, Swanson and Georgia 316 between High Hope Road and Swanson Drive between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday to contact detectives. They are particularly interested in anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area.
