ACLU urges Tennessee hospital to threaten to halt transgender surgeries: ‘Failure to follow science’

A Tennessee lawmaker criticized the ACLU of the Volunteer State on Wednesday after the group attacked a Memphis hospital for halting gender reassignment surgeries and canceling a 19-year-old patient’s planned procedure over concerns.

“The ACLU-TN is deeply concerned about MLH [Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare’s] a dramatic and drastic change in policy regarding the treatment of transgender and/or non-binary patients,” the group wrote in a letter to the facility last Wednesday.

“The ACLU-TN demands that MLH immediately correct its illegal actions … failing which the ACLU-TN will file a formal complaint requesting an investigation,” the letter added.

Despite calls over the past two years to “follow the science” and “listen to the experts,” state Rep. Jason Zachary, a Republican, said neither would be affected by the hospital’s decision.

“Methodist Le Bonheur stopped gender reassignment surgeries, and after being rebuffed by the ACLU, they made this decision, which has nothing to do with science and nothing to do with listening to experts. clearly shows,” he told “Fox & Friends First” Todd Piro.

Methodist Le Bonheur responded to the criticism in a statement earlier this month.

“Our commitment is to provide high quality and compassionate care to every patient regardless of race, sex, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression,” MLH wrote, according to the Tennessee Lookout.

“In recent weeks, some health care providers have raised questions about patients receiving gender-affirming procedures at a facility affiliated with our health system. This has led to a temporary suspension to review current practices. We are transgender. and/or have not changed our treatment practices. Non-binary patients. We have not backed away from our commitment as a health care system for all. We understand that physicians are moving forward with rescheduling patients by the end of the year.”

Zachary has criticized the spread of gender-affirming care as a “social contagion” because the number of diagnoses of gender dysphoria among minors – the group she is most interested in undergoing sex-reassignment surgery – has skyrocketed in recent years.

Since 2017, cases of gender dysphoria among young people have almost tripled.

“[The numbers have] From 21,000 in 2019 to 42,000 in 2021,” he said, adding that he was “very disappointed” by Methodist Le Bonheur’s decision to end its gender reassignment policy.

A study from the University of California, San Francisco found that the number of “best” surgeries performed on young girls is 13 times higher than a decade ago, to stop the irreversible procedure for minors. alarming callers.

Komodo Health, a health information technology company, also found that gender dysphoria diagnoses among minors increased from 24,847 in 2020 to 42,167 in 2021.

“Our children are very impressionable … when they’re younger, we don’t let them make decisions about what they eat, when they sleep, what medicine they take, but now we’ve made that process where they can. About their gender make up your mind,” said Zachary.

“It’s totally inappropriate, it’s wrong, it’s something that lawmakers should be brave enough to stand up for. [against] and say “no, this is not something we can allow to continue in our country.”
