Alexis Lafrenier’s fight has gone a long way with the Rangers team

Alexis Lafrenier was exempted from Islanders center JG Page’s high hit over his teammate Ryan Lindgren in the third period of the Rangers’ final 4-1 victory over Long Island on Wednesday night, so the former first-overall pick triggered his first full fight. Hockey career.

After less than two minutes in control of the trip to the page – a call that the referees certainly missed – Lafrenier returned to crosscheck the page. Lafreniere caught two of them before chucking his gloves and putting a handful of shots on the side of the page, which prompted both players to fall into the ice.

“I thought it was a little too much, and I didn’t like it, so I went to him,” LaFreniere said after a Rangers Thanksgiving rehearsal Thursday afternoon. “And you’ve seen what happened, so you know, maybe I need to work on my fighting skills.”

The Rangers may be facing the skeleton of the Islanders lineup, which has been diminished by the COVID-19 outbreak and chronic injuries, but the islands are still able to play physical brand hockey. Exceptional quality of organization identity.

Young players like Lafreniere may refrain from competing in such games, including not only how to curb an opponent’s aggression but also how to deal with it.

“I’ve always played physically, but you’re more physical here, I think,” the 20-year-old winger said. “[In] This league, you are given nothing. You really have to work for your space. So it’s good to be physical and add something to your game.

Lafreniere said that like many of his younger teammates, Ryan Reeves took some lessons from the School of Fighting. He described Reeves as one of the toughest guys in the NHL and noted that experienced enforcers can teach Rangers how to defend themselves in those situations.

Lindgren, who said he was right after Page’s hit, watched Lafreniere and Adam Fox stand in his way from the locker room. The defenseman said it made a lot of sense to see two of his most commonly played teammates defend him that way.

“He stepped up for a teammate, but, once again, he didn’t want the whole fight,” head coach Gerard Gallant said of Lafreniere before the Rangers traveled to Boston for their Friday matinee against the Bruins. “But when you are a team and you stick together, it goes a long way with your teammates. For him, doing it [Wednesday] At night, it went a long way with his teammates.

Through his three seasons with Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Lafrenier has never been known as a fighter – and he probably never knows – as he is still adding dimensions to his game. Part of this is to balance his physical game with his smart approach to the game that promotes his offensive abilities.

“I’m not a fighter,” he said. “I’m not going to watch matches every day, but you never know what’s going to happen. So I’m always ready, for sure.
