Survey: Americans say the US is facing a mental health crisis

By Maureen Grope and Sarah Elbeshbishi

According to a survey by the University of New / Suffolk, the majority of Americans believe the US is in the grip of a full-blown mental health crisis.

The survey found that nearly two out of 10 registered voters believe there is a “mental health crisis” in the country, nearly two years into the COVID-19 epidemic, which has led to a rise in depression, anxiety, stress, addiction and other challenges.

Jared Skillings, head of professional practice at the American Psychological Association, said the survey shows that mental health is no longer just a discussion among academics or elite policymakers. “It’s normal people,” he said.

Last month, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy used the term “crisis” in calling for “quick and organized response” to mental health challenges in children, adolescents and young adults.

A survey by the American Psychological Association in August found that many people are overwhelmed by daily struggles. Continuous risk assessment, increased routines, and uncertainty about where the epidemic is going,
The group said.

The $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package approved last March included billions of dollars for the prevention and treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders, including primary and through
Secondary schools.

Dr. Klein is the Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Kristin Moutier, Implementation of mental health strategies is also important, and it can be asymmetrical across one
Decentralized system.

One example is the attempt to convert the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline from its current 10-digit number to a three-digit code: 988. By mid-2022, the goal is to have a quick-dial suicide hotline for 24 hours a day by trained professionals. .

The Biden administration is prioritizing the transition, one step Moutier praised. But very few states have passed or introduced legislation to build their 988 systems.
