AOC presses NYC prosecutors on ‘excessive bail’ for other House Dem prisoners

Democrats on the House oversight committee are seeking more answers from New York City District Attorneys, suggesting that “excessive bail” and other factors have kept inmates in jail longer than necessary.

“We have serious concerns that excessive bail will lead to unnecessary pre-arrest and a humanitarian crisis in New York City’s prison system, especially on Rikers Island,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DNY, Jamie Raskin. D-Md., And Carolyn Maloney, DN.Y.

In Monday’s letter, members requested briefings from the DA in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Richmond County and Queens. “All detainees charged with misconduct or nonviolent offenses and those who face significant health risks from coronavirus have agreed to new bail hearings and release,” he requested.

His letter warns “[i]If these conditions are not addressed, federal intervention may be necessary to protect the detainees from additional harm. ”

House Democrats told the New York Times that more than three-quarters of the 6,000 people arrested in the Raiders still have to be tried.

“The high bail amount will result in a two-tier justice system,” the members said, “and those who can afford bail will be able to escape inhuman conditions in pre-detention facilities such as Rikers Island.

The letters come amid widespread push to improve various aspects of the criminal justice system.

The problem was repeated on Monday as the public learned more about the suspect, Darrell Brooks, who drove the SUV at a parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin this weekend. It was Brooks Reportedly released Earlier this month, Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm called the jail an “unduly low” bail recommendation.

According to a Chisholm spokesman, Brooks has multiple pending cases in Milwaukee County – including a 2020 case involving two counts of reckless endangerment and possession of a firearm, according to a Chisholm spokesman.
