Apple delays release of driving licenses on iPhones until next year

Apple is delaying the release of a feature that allows iPhone owners to keep their driving license or identity on their smartphone.

According to the website for iOS 15, Apple will note that the ability to add ID cards to the wallet app on iPhones will begin in early 2022.

When the feature was introduced earlier this year at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple revealed that the feature will be launched later this year.

The change was first reported by tech site MacRumors.

In September, Apple revealed the first eight states to support the Wallet ID feature. Apple says it will launch this option first in Arizona and Georgia. Followed by Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah.

Later this year, some Apple iPhone users will be able to add their driver's license or state IDs to the Apple Wallet.

The option to add a driving license or state ID is just one of many planned features for the wallet app on iPhones. Earlier this year, Apple Wallet said it would add features such as digital home keys, car keys and workplace badges to allow access to buildings.

Apple said in September that the primary use for having your state ID on your phone is to pop your phone out at airport security checkpoints for travel. The company said the Transportation Security Administration would enable security checkpoints and lanes and participating airports to use ID in the wallet.

“The addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to the Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision to replace the physical wallet with a secure and easy to use mobile wallet,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said in a September statement.
