Apple sues Israeli spyware company NSO for preventing hacker-for-hire from accessing iPhones and other gadgets

Tech giant Apple is suing Israel’s NSO Group because it is trying to prevent ‘hacker-for-hire’ spyware from breaking into products like the iPhone.

Apple says NSO’s software, known as Pegasus, has been used to attack a small number of its customers worldwide.

In a complaint filed in a California court yesterday, NSO employees have created ‘sophisticated cyber-surveillance machines that invite routine and explicit abuse’.

Hacking threat: Apple claims that NSO software, Pegasus, has been used to attack a small number of its customers worldwide.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said the Israeli firm would “spend millions of dollars on sophisticated surveillance technologies without effective accountability.”

The NSO has widely denied guilt and said its products are being used by governments to prevent terrorism and crime.

The company was recently blacklisted by the US Department of Commerce and sued by Facebook after the software infiltrated through its encrypted WhatsApp messaging service.

The software can access personal and location data and control microphones and cameras. NSO did not respond to requests for comment.
