Arlo Parks has opened up to receiving its first Mercury Awards nomination and how it’s already contemplating plans for its second record.
The London singer nominated this morning (22 July) for ‘Collapsed in Sunbeams’, which garnered a perfect five-star review Upon release in January.
“It feels like a surreal moment to me. It’s like a dream come true and I don’t say it lightly,” Parks remarked respectfully.
“It’s something I used to watch when I was a kid. I would be on the internet at 2 a.m. checking who was shortlisted and now here I am. It feels really amazing.”
When asked why listeners are attached to the record, Parks said it has a “sense of honesty and humanity” that fans can relate to.
“I’m just talking about being a human being. Growing up and falling in love, falling in love, going to those dark places,” she said.
“But it’s all real, and I hope people can connect to the three-dimensional side of it.”
Describing the moment he learned about the nominations, Parks said: “I was at my flat and my manager called and said ‘You want to sit for this’. It was morning and I was quite furious because I didn’t drink coffee.
“He said ‘You’ve been elected to Mercury!’ And I loved falling back to the ground. It was great.”
So when can we expect more new music from Arlo Parks?
“I’m doing a lot of sessions and I’m writing a lot,” she said. “The format in which the songs are going to come out is unclear, there are no concrete plans but I am definitely working on the stuff.
