Samuel Umtiti have signed a new deal in Barcelona, with the club likely to register Ferran Torres after months of trying to get rid of him.
Barca have been very desperate to lower their pay all season, as their financial problems have hurt their entire team.
However, after all, the France defender has now signed a new contract at the Nou Camp, signing until 2026, reducing his salary for the next 18 months.
The move, which has partnered with the fact that Philippe Coutinho has joined Aston Villa for the rest of the season on loan, means the new signing Ferran Torres can be registered.
Torres signed for Barca at the beginning of the month, but the former Manchester City forward was unable to register due to pay limit.
In a statement on their website, Barca confirmed the news, “FC Barcelona and first-team player Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to extend the contract until 30 June 2026.
“The French defender is lowering a portion of the salary he is supposed to receive in the remaining one and a half years of his contract.
“The extension operation of this deal will not have any further financial commitments to FC Barcelona with respect to the player.
“FC Barcelona would like to express their gratitude to Samuel Umtiti for their willingness and love for the club.
“With the extension of this agreement, FC Barcelona will be able to increase its ‘Financial Fair Play’ quota and thus register Ferran Torres with the Spanish Professional Football League.”
Whether this new deal means they will eventually get some playing time or not remains to be seen.
