Ben Simmons practices with the 76ers as the saga takes another turn

It was just practice – we were talking about practice – but Ben Simmons was finally a Sunday.

After holding more training camp while looking for business, Simmons practiced with the 76ers on Sunday, three days before the start of their season.

“He was just one of the players,” coach Doc Rivers said Told reporters. “It was good overall. He was in and out.

The three-time All-Star finally reported to the team on Monday — surprising the organization with their timing, ESPN reported — after they had not yet received the trade they had hoped for. After summer reports that his relationship with the team is probably irreparable, it remains to be seen whether he will actually fit in another match for the 76ers.

Rivers said it is still unknown whether Simmons will be ready to play Wednesday when the 76ers open their opener against the Pelicans.

“I’ll watch.” Rivers said. “Conditioning, just looking at him. I thought he was in decent shape. Still clearly not in the shape of the game. … Right now, I’m trying to get him back comfortable and comprehensive.

“When he’s ready, he plays.”
