Beyoncé missed out on her first win of the night at the 2023 Grammys because she was stuck in a traffic jam outside the arena.
After the “Break My Soul” singer won the award for best R&B song, Terrelle Nash and Nile Rodgers took the stage to accept the award on her behalf.
While Nash – aka The Dream – briefly thanked the crowd in a censored speech, Trevor Noah stepped in again. offer an explanation.
“So really, Beyoncé is on her way. The upside of hosting the Grammys in L.A. is that everybody can be here, the downside of hosting the Grammys in L.A. is the traffic,” Noah explained, on the show. Despite being half an hour.
The former “Daily Show” host explained that with the win, Beyoncé is tied with Jorge Solti for the most Grammys of all time — a whopping 31.
Before the news of Beyoncé’s late arrival, celebrities — like Lizzo — were snapped trying to catch a glimpse of the superstar.
During Noah’s monologue, he mentioned that Beyonce was sitting in the corner of the arena, and the “Truth Hurts” singer craned her neck to get a peek.
“Where?!” Lizzo yelled as she sat back in her chair trying to find the “Hello” singer.
Although Beyoncé arrived late, her husband Jay-Z was spotted in the crowd without her.
However, she joined the rapper in the crowd shortly after and was presented with her award as she sat down at his table.
Before the main show, the “Single Ladies” star took home trophies for Best Dance/Electronic Recording and Best Traditional R&B Performance. She was nominated for a total of nine awards.
Jay-Z is nominated for Album of the Year and Song of the Year along with his wife as songwriter.
