Amazon is developing two new series within the “Bosch” universe.
Variety It has been learned that Amazon Studios is currently developing shows based on Michael Connelly’s characters Jerry Edgar and Renee Ballard. Edgar was portrayed by Jamie Hector during “Bush’s” seven-season run, while Ballard had never been featured on screen before. According to a person familiar with the situation, Hector is set to reprise his role as Edgar in the new show.
The move to extend “Bosch” is not unexpected. The original series ran for seven seasons on Prime Video until 2021, making it the longest-running Amazon series of all time. The spin-off series “Bosch: Legacy,” featuring the return of Titus Vellore as Harry Bosch, debuts on Amazon Free in 2022. A second season is scheduled to premiere in the fall of 2023. It has not yet been decided whether the two new shows, if they will be picked up to series, will air on Prime Video or Freevi.
On the Edgar show, Bush’s former partner was “tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami,” according to the official logline. “In this charming city, she is forced to balance her new life with the swamp of the city, while chasing her mysterious past.”
Connelly will executive produce the series with Larry Andries (“How to Get Away with Murder,” “The Godfather of Harlem”). Fable Entertainment’s Henrik Baston and Melissa Ovett will executive produce, with Jasmine Russ co-executive producing.
Ballard’s show will see the detective take over the LAPD’s new cold case division. The description states, “More than just investigating unsolved crimes, Renee is dedicated to the department’s reputation and bringing justice to the community. Learning from retired ally and mentor Harry Bosch, Renee works her way up. – solves cases in unorthodox ways while navigating the politics of being a woman growing up in the LAPD.
Connelly will also executive produce the Ballard show alongside Michael Alamo (“Major Crimes,” “The Closer”) and Kendall Sherwood (“Major Crimes,” “Your Honor”). Bastin and Aouate will also executive produce through Fabel, with Russ again co-executive producing.
