BREAKING NEWS: UPS, Costco, Airbnb, US Bank and airlines hit major disruptions as 911 services stop in many East Coast cities
A major Internet outage has affected the websites of major retail, financial, logistics and travel websites, and is affecting 911 services in several areas.
Down Detector, a service that detects whether websites are functioning properly, began reporting a series of at least 50 major website outages shortly before 12 p.m. EST on Thursday.
Potentially affected websites, according to Down Detector, included Costco, Airbnb, US Bank, UPS, LBL, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, AT&T, Groupon, Expedia, HBO Max and TikTok.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s filing page also displayed a message saying it was ‘temporarily unavailable’.
Costco’s website was among those affected Thursday as widespread Internet outage
In addition to the above websites, several global financial institutions including Interactive Brokers, Santander Bank, BBVA and BB&T are being affected.
Down Detector tweeted that Amazon Web Services and Oracle Cloud were also experiencing issues, but a look at the Amazon Web Services website shows its operations are operating normally.
Other websites affected include Microsoft, Evernote, Go Daddy, Vanguard and many other tech or financial-focused domains.
Akamai Technologies, a global content delivery network that provides Backbone Internet services, said in a statement that it is ‘aware of an emerging problem with the Edge DNS service.’
“We are actively investigating the matter,” the company said.
Down Detector also indicated to continue with Airbnb’s site amid widespread outage
Meanwhile, at least nine counties and three cities in Virginia reported 911 outages or call issues on Thursday.
‘There appears to be a multi-state 911 outage. This issue is being addressed,’ Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue and Emergency Management said in a statement.
In Campbell County, Virginia, the Department of Public Safety said all services to the county’s E-911 and non-emergency phone lines have been disrupted.
Developing story, more to follow.
