Cam Thomas, the Nets ’rookie, is big on wins over Spurs

Cam Thomas wasn’t the only Nets rookie in Sunday’s overtime win over the Spurs.

While Thomas sank the game-winning bucket in 1.7 seconds at the OT, rookie teammates Kessler Edwards, Day’ron Sharp and recent opener David Duke Jr. also scored significant minutes in the revised rotation of Brooklyn coach Steve Nash.

Sharp scored five of his seven points and Edwards sank two key 3-pointers in the second half. Duke finished with six points and five rebounds while making his third consecutive start.

“I think they all did a good job. We are in a position where we can trust those guys but they really need time to develop and play,” Nash said.

“It’s a tough way to work but we’re trying to give those guys some chance and they did very well.”

Cam Thomas wasn’t the only Nets rookie to come up big in the team’s overtime win against the Spurs.

Nash did not play Bruce Brown, Paul Millsap or Jevon Carter on Sunday, but veterans Blake Griffin (8:22) and James Johnson (7:55) were used sparingly, as the Nets expanded to four games in five days. Non-vaccinated All-Star Kyrie Irving is back on the team, including Monday night’s Kovid Makeup Game in Portland.

Kevin Durant said he was “excited” that former Warriors player Clay Thompson made his first NBA appearance on Sunday after the 2019 playoffs after suffering a serious knee and Achilles injury.

“I know it’s going to be a great, big day in the Bay Area. It’s going to be electric today,” Durant said. I know every basketball fan will tune in, so I’m looking forward to his return and healthy rest and the rest of his career. I’m glad he’s back.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of former Spurs star Tim Duncan, “No Duncan, no championship.” Asked on Sunday what it was like to train Durant at the Olympics, he said something similar: “No Kevin, no gold.”

LaMarcus Aldridge is sidelined for the second time in four games because of a foot sore.

“I don’t think it’s too serious,” Nash said. “I think he’s a little embarrassed and we’re trying to get past it. I think it’s a short-term injury.

The Blazers will be without Damien Lillard, CJ McCollum and Norman Powell on Monday due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols.
