Cory Bush’s campaign pays more than half a million dollars for private security after calling police to pay off

Rep. Cory Bush, one of the most outspoken federal politicians on defunding the police, now has more than $500,000 in personal security expenses.

The Missouri lawmaker’s campaign spent $38,528.63 on “security services” between Oct. 20 and Nov. 28, according to his general report. The payments went primarily to the St. Louis-based Peacekeeping Service, which employs several “security operators” with military or law enforcement backgrounds, despite their opposition, its website shows.

The new personal security payments come on top of the $490,000 the Bush campaign spent on the 2022 election. The campaign has now surpassed the half-million dollar threshold for such services, a luxury most Americans cannot afford.

And as Bush’s campaign continues to pump money into the security detail, he has become one of the most vocal federal politicians calling for defunding the police, which he has repeatedly investigated.

“I always say [fellow Democrats]”If you all had fixed this before I got here, I wouldn’t have to say these things,” a member of “The Squad” told Axios in February.

Bush said the “pay the police” slogan was not the problem and accused Democrats of not keeping their promise.

first reported on Bush’s security payments in July 2021, prompting questions on CBS News about whether hiring security was hypocritical in pushing law enforcement to strip cash and budgets.

“Would they prefer me dead?” Bush asked. “Would you rather I die? Would you like to see it? Would you like to see me die? You know, because it might be an alternative.”

Bush said he would ensure his safety because he had taken his own life and had “a lot of work to do.”

“So ask him and deflate the police,” he added.

St. Louis KMOV4 later revealed that Bush hired two sheriff’s deputies, Tylance Jackson and Maurice Thompson, to provide his security.

St. Louis Sheriff Vernon Betts said the discovery led to the termination of Jackson and Thompson, who were unable to obtain permits for the side gig.

And while Bush says security is about threats against him, other “Squad” members, like many other politicians, receive threats but spend less campaign money on the services.

Bush’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
