CVS 851 completes the rollout of time-lapse drug safeties at Texas pharmacy locations

CVS Health has completed a rollout of time-lapse drug safeties at all 851 pharmacy locations in Texas, including in Target stores.

CVS Health to close hundreds of drug stores

Safes are designed to prevent pharmacy robberies and to prevent the potential diversion of controlled substance medications such as opioids such as oxycodone and hydrocodone. Each location has a warning indication that SafeS is in use.

CVS, which began using Safes in Indianapolis in 2015, emphasized that pharmacy locations have seen a 70% drop in robberies since their implementation. Since then, the company has introduced time delay safes in 19 states and the District of Columbia, resulting in a 50% reduction in robberies at CVS dispensaries in those local communities. In September, CVS added SafeSource to all 223 pharmacy locations in Houston.

In addition to SafeS, CVS Health has established 252 drug-disposal units at its Texas pharmacy locations and donated 69 units to local police departments in the state. To date, about 250,000 pounds of unwanted and outdated drugs have been stored in Texas.

The company supports over 4,000 safe drug disposal units at CVS Pharmacy locations, and through local law enforcement agencies nationwide, it has collected more than 3 million pounds of unwanted drugs that may have been diverted, misused or ended up in the water supply.

At CVS Pharmacy locations that do not offer a secure drug disposal kiosk, the company offers DisposeRx packets at no extra cost to patients filling out the opioid prescription for the first time. When added to a container with warm water, the packets break down the drug into an insoluble biodegradable gel, allowing it to be safely disposed of in the garbage at home.

CVS Pharmacy patients can now access the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico without personal prescription.
