Coming out of UFC Vegas 41, Paulo Costa claimed that the fight against Marvin Vettori was ultimately the explanation for why he needed to lift 20 pounds over his contract weight during the week of the fight. And, to his credit, he provided one. Believe it or not, this is a completely different situation.

“I had some problems with my normal weight. I came out a little overweight because I had to stop training for a few weeks, ”Costa told the assembled press after his loss, explaining that the left bicep injury was the source of his trouble.

If that’s his description, Marvin Vettori isn’t buying it. And, for his part, top-seeded lightweight Dan Hooker doesn’t sound like he’s picking up on what ‘Borrachinha’ is down to. ‘Hangman’ stopped by Submission Radio for an interview before the UFC 267 match against Islam Makhachev, where he paid his two cents for Costa’s fight week attitude.

“What Costa did, he didn’t earn the right to do it,” Hooker explained. “It was a funny situation because it was just a couple of weeks ago that we let Nick Diaz roll up and do it. But Paul Diaz did not do what Nick Diaz did for the sport, but obviously the same result, he completely changed the weight category. So I don’t know, it’s a Kind of funny, like a little power play. But it’s not for me, unlike the Anzac culture of the sport.

“That never happens, like in New Zealand or Australia. If your fighter shows up at a local kickboxing show with 10 kilos (approx. 22 lbs) overweight and you do what you do about it, I feel like you hit the car park. It’s just a sign of respect. It is a matter of respect, and I show my weight to my opponent, to my gym, to the people I represent. ‘,’ FU ‘for UFC,’ FU ‘for their opponent.

As a result of Costa’s insistence on moving the fight to lightweight heavyweight, UFC President Dana White has said Costa will now compete in that category forever.

“They have to fight in 205,” White explained during the post-presser. “He is a lightweight heavyweight. You saw him tonight. He’s huge. They can’t do ’85. It shows you that he can’t make 185 pounds.

When asked about Costa’s injury, Vettori himself suggested, “Can’t you run with a bicep tear to gain weight?”

There is still no word on what will happen to the Brazilian, but whatever it is, it is practically guaranteed to take place in a whole new category against a whole new set of competitors.

Hooker vs. Makhachev takes place on the main card of UFC 267, which airs this Saturday on ESPN + as a non-PPV event. The card is set to headline a light heavyweight title fight between John Blacovich and Glover Teixeira. An interim bantamweight title fight is reserved between Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen for the co-main event.
