DC has reached the milestone of grim homicide not seen in nearly 2 decades, Mayer blames epidemic for escalation


Washington, DC, recorded its 200th homicide on Monday, a grim milestone that hit the nation’s capital for the first time since 2003, according to police statistics.

The latest homicide victim in the city is a man who was shot in the 4700 block of South Capitol Street around 11pm Monday night. LOVEBYLIFE5 DC reported. Police are investigating the murder, but there are no suspects or motives at this time.

Monday’s homicide figures are the highest in the city, after a total of 248 people died in 2003.

In 2020, 198 homicides were recorded – an increase from 2019 when the city saw 166 murders. The last time in the city there were 88 cases of less than 100 murders in 2012.

The increase in violent crime in Washington reflects a national trend because many cities are experiencing a rise in gun violence. Some have cut law enforcement budgets as calls for police reform have grown since last year’s protests over police brutality and racial injustice.

“The rise in crime has many causes, one of which is measuring the effects of DC Council’s reactionary implementation of police ‘reform’ measures that are not properly considered,” the statement said. “Additionally, the council’s continuing desire to reduce the size and funding of the police department is swinging like a black cloud in our city.”

Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser and city leaders Announced a partnership with federal law enforcement Monday in an effort to combat rising violence. Authorities now offer more cash prizes for tipsters who report gun-related crimes.

“We are literally throwing every resource of this issue at our disposal,” Bowser Said during the briefing. “We know that COVID-19 upsets many parts of our lives, and unfortunately it has improved the most vulnerable public safety ecosystem in our community.”

Bowser added: “We need to push on all fronts until we see positive change.”

As of Wednesday, crime across the entire city has increased by 2% year-over-year compared to the same period last year. Police statistics. While violent crime figures such as homicide are up 12%, sexual assault is up 7% compared to 2020.
