Librarians and historians at the Arlington Public Library Center for Local History want donations of archives to archive the history of Hispanic County in Virginia.
Over the past three decades, the Latino community of Arlington has grown and amassed a wealth of history.
And this week, librarians and historians at the local history center at the Arlington Public Library are asking for donations of documents to collect the county’s Hispanic history.
This project is called the Re-encuentro de Arlington Latinos.
“This is the perfect time to start collecting those items,” said Judy Knudsen, manager of local history. “The organizations that are helping immigrants in the new country are 20 years old, and they now have considerable work to do.”
Archivists are calling for photographs; Minutes from meetings; And financial records from Hispanic community groups, civic organizations, churches and residents, said library spokesman Henrik Sundquist.
Barbara M., of the Central Library. The group is launching the effort with a community celebration Saturday afternoon from 2 to 5 pm in the Donnellan Auditorium. Knudsen said historians collect some items during the event.
“It’s their minutes; it’s their flyers,” he said. “All of these things help tell what they were interested in and what they accomplished.”
Arlington’s Hispanic population expanded greatly from 1990 to 2000 – an increase of about 53%. Now, they make up about 16% of the county, Sundquist said.
“We are really celebrating our diverse culture and heritage here,” he said. “And our Latino community is a big part of who we are and what we become.”
This is the first phase of a multi-year project that will impact future generations.
“We want people to be interested in making sure we continue to get this material,” Knudsen said. “In the coming years, historians who want to learn about the Arlington and Latino community will have the materials they need to do it.”
