Well, that quickly escalated.
In a bizarre scene during Wednesday night’s Yankees-Orioles game in Baltimore, umpire Tim Timmons threw the entire field crew off the field in the ninth inning.
Amid light rains, crews were deployed behind the tarp, ready to evacuate after the game was over to protect the field. But Timmons didn’t have any of that, as he pointed to the staff and threw them out of the game.
After a brief confusion, the staff seemed to understand the order, and they were jogging in an orderly manner. Predictably, as soon as they left the field, the rain began to blow.
The staff was dispatched in the top of the ninth inning with second and third runners, and the Yankees trailed 3-2. Brett Gardner then hit a single to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead that gave the Yankees the win.
It is not clear why Timmons fired off the field staff. It certainly came as a surprise to everyone.
