On June 25, Jasmine Ortiz released her single “21” with an accompanying music video. The music video for “21” was filmed at the University of Miami where Ortiz attends the Frost School of Music. With “21”, Ortiz explores the nostalgia he felt for friends and school. Over email, the showbiz cheat sheet sent Ortiz some questions about the single and his experience filming a music video at the University of Miami.
This interview has been edited and abridged.
Jasmine Ortiz felt inspired by her friends while writing ’21’
Ortiz worked with music producer Cesar da Emperor on “21” during a week-long writing session. The singer-songwriter spent weeks both writing and recording music, and “21” was the last song she composed over the weekend.
“I started with some lyric and melody ideas for the poem, then Caesar came up with the chorus melody and I put it into words. It was a really collaborative and cohesive process,” Ortiz told Showbiz over email.
Like many people around the world, Ortiz found himself in need of human connection during the quarantine for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“I remember feeling so isolated and alone during the initial quarantine that we went through last March,” she said. “During that time I was heavily dependent on my friends and we supported each other by doing Zoom Hangouts or FaceTime.”

Ortiz moved to Los Angeles, taking online classes sometime in the fall of 2020, and she returned to campus for her spring semester in early 2021. Being away from his friends because of the quarantine and moving to L.A. made him “21.”
“The song was really inspired from that transition period back to normal school life and seeing our closest friends again after so long. It’s about remembering our good times in the past and more memories in the future Creating is about being excited,” she told Showbiz.
Jasmine Ortiz filmed ’21’ at the University of Miami
Prior to Ortiz, Drake was the only actor authorized to film at the University of Miami. The rapper filmed his 2018 music video “God’s Plan” on a college campus.
“As a student at the University of Miami — and a huge Drake fan — I couldn’t see a better way to pay tribute to the two of them than by recreating some of my favorite elements of the ‘God’s Plan’ music video. ’21 .’ The videos for the campus scenes were some of my favorites to shoot because those places hold a lot of meaningful memories for me as a growing senior,” Ortiz said.

She continued, “It felt incredibly monumental to be able to film this love letter to my school and friends in places where I really bonded with them.”
Singer wants the song to inspire the listeners
While “21” is incredibly personal to “Ortiz,” she hopes fans will relate to the single’s larger message.
“I really hope the showrunners take away from ’21’ is realizing that it’s never too late to reconnect. After 10 months away from my college friends and campus, when we finally Reconnected, it felt like no time passed,” Ortiz told Showbiz. “The song is both nostalgia and hope for the future.”
Looking to the future, Ortiz has several projects in the works. Fans can look forward to a new single as well as a new live performance sometime in August.
