The national park is located less than 2 miles south of the US Capitol in the Southwest waterfront area of Washington. It opened in March 2008, three years after citizens moved to the city after moving there from Montreal, where they had been known as Expo for more than 30 years.

Both the National Park and nearby Audi Field, which opened in 2018 as the home of football’s DC United, were built in the arena as part of efforts to revitalize that part of the city.
