An MLB game between the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres turned into chaos on Saturday night when gunfire was heard near National Park in Washington, forcing players and fans to flee to safety.
Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, with the National’s Twitter account confirming the shooting outside the stadium. Players and fans can be seen running for cover.
“Something is going on at National Park,” tweeted Boston Globe player Ben Wolin. “The players ran off the field and the fans ran from the stands.”
A source in the DC Metropolitan Police Department told LBL that four people were gunned down outside the stadium, although none of the wounds appeared to be life-threatening.

Two victims were found injured outside the stadium, while two others sought treatment at a nearby hospital, Washington’s Fox 5 reported.
The Washington Post’s Andrew Golden wrote on Twitter: “Padres stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado opened a gate to the field area so that some frightened fans could take refuge in the team’s dugout.”
A police source said the area near the stadium has seen a spurt in gun violence recently. Recent incidents include an Uber driver being carjacked and killed by juvenile suspects.
The shots fired just one night after a 6-year-old girl was shot dead in the nation’s capital, injuring five adults in the same incident.
The public address announcer at the stadium asked fans to stay inside the park.
The game was in the sixth inning at the time of the incident.
Just after 10 p.m., the Nationals posted a statement, saying play had been suspended and would resume at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, after games that had already been scheduled for Sunday. . The Padres were leading 8-4 when Saturday’s play was interrupted.
The Washington Nationals posted on Twitter that gunfire had been reported.
Fire brigade and ambulance were seen on the spot.
Washington, DC Metro Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from LBL.
The national park is located less than 2 miles south of the US Capitol in the Southwest waterfront area of Washington. It opened in March 2008, three years after citizens moved to the city after moving there from Montreal, where they had been known as Expo for more than 30 years.
Both the National Park and nearby Audi Field, which opened in 2018 as the home of football’s DC United, were built in the arena as part of efforts to revitalize that part of the city.
