Federal unemployment benefits ending this week for some Americans

Americans living in some GOP-led states could lose their unemployment benefits this week, almost three months before additional aid ends.

At least 25 states, led by Republican governors, decided in May and June to withdraw early from pandemic relief programs, including an increase in the right to additional wages and unemployment benefits in the amount of a weekly wage. Additional benefits do not expire until September 6th.

Alaska, Iowa, Mississippi and Missouri were the first to end pandemic-era programs on June 12 for laid-off Americans.

Other states cancel benefits early – Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Texas , West. Virginia and Wyoming – will cut unemployment benefits by an additional $ 300 in the summer.

According to one, about 16 million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits estimate published by the Century Foundation.

These measures were based on the Ministry of Labor’s April wage report, which found that the economy added only 266,000 jobs last month – a sharp loss of 1 million forecast by Refinitive economists. . Wage growth missed the expected results in May, raising concerns about labor shortages and its potential impact on the economy’s recovery from the pandemic.

GOP lawmakers quickly blamed additional unemployment benefits for an increase in anemia cases, but experts said they feared contracting COVID-19 due to a lack of childcare and a shortage of workers.

Before the start of the pandemic, there were 7.6 million fewer jobs than in February 2020.

The average state pension on unemployment is approx $ 330 per week. With the federal supplement, Americans receive a $ 630 weekly unemployment benefit. (For comparison, that’s about $ 32,000 a year, or twice the country’s minimum wage).

President Biden and Democrats have rejected the notion that Americans would rather stay at home and return to work as part of a $ 1.9 trillion anti-coronavirus law passed in March – collecting additional benefits for the unemployed.

Biden noted that unemployment benefits will end in September as planned, although some party members are rushing to make the extra money permanent.

“His term expires in 90 days,” Biden said Friday. “It makes sense.”
