Police said a Florida man stole candles from a mall store and sprayed bear mace repellent to dozens of patrons before fleeing.
Investigators said the theft occurred Saturday afternoon at a Bath & Body Works store in a mall in the Doral suburb west of Miami. The unknown suspect entered the shop, filled a bag full of candles and started sprinkling mace on people.
“It’s only in the Miami story,” Doral Police spokesman Ray Valdes told Miami Herald. “You can’t make it.”
Around 35 people were affected. Some were taken to hospital for treatment, including the store manager, but officials did not know how many people were to be admitted. Bear mace is a strong irritant to a person’s eyes and respiratory system.
A part of the mall was evacuated after the messing on Saturday. It is believed that the person responsible ran away in the cab.
Valdés said the suspect could face multiple armed robberies and escalation of battery charges after his arrest.
