Former teammate of Raheem Sterling and Jordan Pickford appeared on Green Street

A West Ham United Academy graduate and former England Youth International reflected on his eventful journey from East London to Eastern Europe, appearing on Green Street has been thrown into the mix!

Matthias Phanimo was one of England’s brightest young stars after captaining the Three Lions’ Under-16 team at the 2009 Victory Shield. He played in a team that included Jordan Pickford and Raheem Sterling, both of whom are founding stars of Gareth Southgate’s senior team.

But for Funimo, things worked a little differently. Let’s look back to 2005 when young Mathias appeared in the classic “Green Street” film profiling an American college student caught up in the world of football hooliganism, starring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam.

“He came to the academy and literally grabbed some of us. We filmed the training sessions, had a lot of fun with it and it was really good.

“It’s a great experience as a kid to meet Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam and be a part of it.”

Despite being in West Ham’s books and making his senior debut in the League Cup tie at the age of 18, injuries have taken hold and he was forced to pursue non-league football after being released by the Hammers in 2015.

After spells with Bishop’s Stortford, Eastleigh, Margate and Hornchurch, the 27-year-old spoke in great detail about his fascinating journey, which led him to the second-tier team in Slovenia, Drava Plutz.

He took Slovenian football by storm and scored 19 goals in 29 games for the club, moving to the Bosnian Premier League side, Mladost Doboj Kakanj.

Another impressive campaign followed, and he now uses his business to FK Sarajevo, where he earned the Bosnian Premier League title winner’s medal.

“I can now say that I have no regrets for this move. This is probably one of the best things I’ve ever done to restart my career,” he said.

“I hit double figures last season. That was my personal goal. I’m glad I did it and I’m going to hit the same goal this year.”

So, have you ever been on a pub quiz and asked, “What FK Sarajevo player currently appears on Green Street?” You now know the answer!
