Nash, who performed as Diesel in WWE, defeated Backlund in an eight-second match at the Madison Square Garden live event to become the WWE Champion. The title change took place 10 days after WWE returned to the United States after the European tour.
Speaking on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions show, Nash said he “smelled a match” on tour after drinking too much. He is asked to go to Vince McMahon’s house, where he thinks he will receive confirmation of his release.
“I’m like, ‘Well, I’m f**** so bad he wants to fire me personally,'” Nash said. “He’s not going to FedEx me, he’s going to fire me personally. So I’m thinking, ‘Vince is going to fire me.’ So of course Vince gets busy, I fall asleep on his couch in his house. He comes in, looks at me, and goes, ‘Hey, make yourself comfortable.’ I sat up, he’s like, ‘Come on, let’s go to the pool.'”
Steve Austin was once fired by former WCW president Eric Bischoff via FedEx. He jokingly replied that Vince McMahon would be a real man if he had fired Nash face-to-face inside his house.
