Gucci Mane’s stage name has nothing to do with the fashion house

Today (or in history, for that matter) there aren’t many rappers who stick to their real names when it comes to the industry. Whether it’s because they wanted to keep their identity away from the limelight or were simply ready for a good change, the motivation behind it is often alluring. Even more fascinating is the incredibly talented Gucci Mane, who despite often wearing Gucci was inspired not by the fashion house but by the surname of a family member.

Born in 1980 to Ralph Everett Dudley and Vicky Jean Davis, Gucci Mane was named Redrick Delantique Davis when he was born. The Alabama-born rapper would soon be a pioneer in the hip-hop sub-genre of trap music and would go on to achieve achievements beyond his wildest dreams.

He would later add another platinum to his pile of achievements with the single “Curve” with The Weeknd.

Gucci Mane’s stage name was inspired by a family member

Given that you can find a Gucci mane in Gucci costumes on more occasions, it’s no surprise that many fans thought they got their name from the fashion house. As crazy as it sounds, the fashion house really had nothing to do with this rapper’s stage name. According to Billboard, his grandmother named his father Gucci Mane, and it stuck with Davis as he began his career in hip-hop and rap. Talking about it, he also reports in an interview saying, “She didn’t know anything about his clothes.”

Nearly a decade after his debut, the “1017” rapper considered changing his stage name to Gwop, which means “Get Your Wet Up P**c”, but fans were so against it that he announced that he was Gucci. Will keep the mane on. Twitter. “I am not officially changing my name to Guwop,” he wrote. “It will officially remain as Gucci due to my fans’ reaction.” Talk about a sigh of relief!

Here’s How Other Famous Rappers Invented Their Stage Names

Gucci Mane is far from being the only rapper to use a stage name instead of his real name — and you won’t believe the range of inspiration behind them all.

In addition to Waka Flocka Flame getting its name from a childhood cartoon character and A$AP Rocky getting its name from childhood friends and nicknames, there are many inspirations behind some of the most famous stage names we have today. To name a few, there’s Macklemore (real name Ben Haggerty), who drew inspiration from an alter-ego superhero he’d be attracted to in high school, and Lupe Fiasco (real name Wasalu Muhammad Jaco), who took his own life from a firm. Got the stage name Album and the name of a friend.

There’s also The Game (real name Jayceon Terrell Taylor), who got the nickname from her grandmother for being “the game” for anything, and Future (real name Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn) was taken on her stage by Dungeon Family’s G-Rock. The name was given to him by those who regarded him as the future of the musical collective.
