How Dolly Parton Described Husband Carl Dean in 1978 in Playboy Magazine

Dolly Parton has had a long, successful career. Despite being one of the biggest stars in the world, little is known about her longtime husband Carl Dean. The two met in Nashville the day after Parton graduated high school. They dated for two years and then got married. This entire time, Dean has spoken of staying away from the spotlight.

But in an interview the “Jolene” singer did with Playboy Magazine in 1978, she opened up more about her husband than she usually does. Here’s what he said.

Why does Carl Dean insist on staying out of the spotlight?

The first question Parton’s interviewer asked her about her husband was: “Why the secret?”

“He just doesn’t have anyone desire to be in show business,” replied Parton, as recorded in the book dolly on dolly. He said, ‘He does not want his picture to appear in the newspaper. He doesn’t want to go out to the supermarket and tells people, ‘He’s Dolly Parton’s husband.’ There’s a lot of distorted press about how I see them only six weeks a year, which isn’t true. It’s true that last year I was only at home for six weeks, but he did a lot with me on the road. “

Why did Dolly Parton’s husband Carl Dean refuse to participate in her opening show?

Parton’s interviewer said that the press often portrayed Dean as “shy and shy”. The queen of the country said that she is not really like that.

“He’s the funniest, smartest guy in the world,” she said. “He’s really bright. He’s not backward at all. I really just wish people would let him be. He’s a man who loves home.”

Despite Parton’s then-success, Dean insisted on continuing the work.

“He works outside, he’s got his tractor and his grader, he keeps our farm in order,” she said. “He won’t have to work any more, because I’m making decent money now, but he gets up every morning in broad daylight. If he’s not working at our place, he’ll take some work, like paddling someone’s driveway. To grade or clean up one’s property, to get a few hundred bucks. He likes to trade with his money.”

Parton met Dean on his way to the laundromat. He was walking around in his white Chevrolet when he called her and the two started talking. The “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” singer did not initially go out with him. But he told her that he could go babysitting with her the next afternoon. Eventually, she agreed to let him take her on a date and they hit it off.

“Her honesty,” she told Playboy, is what drew her to Dean. “His decency. His worldliness. I like the way he loves me. His understanding of me and the things I do. The way he lets me be free. And let me be me. He Don’t try to strangle me and ask for anything from me.”
