Hurricane Atlantic Canada is about to hit BC: meteorologist

TORONTO – Last week, a devastating hurricane blew across BC and caused massive flooding and evacuation – and now, Atlantic Canada is facing a hurricane caused by similar weather conditions.

“It’s the same storm,” Bob Robichaud, a Nova Scotia-based senior environmental Canadian meteorologist, told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview.

“It’s the same kind of weather setup that causes this kind of rain.”

He explained that this type of extreme precipitation, such as that in BC, occurs when the storm is part of “the most concentrated plume of moisture in a tropical climate”.

“If there is a storm and you get a wet flow from the south, [it’ll be] Compared to what they had on the West Coast last week. And in fact, in some areas of Atlantic Canada, we are potentially seeing more rain than the rain that fell in BC last week.

During one of the earliest BC hurricanes, most of the precipitation fell in Hope, BC, which was more than 250 millimeters from November 13 to November 15.

Some models of Environment Canada suggest that some areas may fall more than 300 mm, while parts of Newfoundland are predicted to be more than 400 mm.

“That’s a little bit more than falling into BC,” Robichaud said. “Now, it’s expected to fall on a very small area with no overpopulation, but still, when you have that amount of rain somewhere, it’s causing a problem.”

When heavy rain falls on a mountainous area, for example, it runs into valleys and can cause problems such as flooding.

“We are already approaching 200 in Nova Scotia, Eastern Nova Scotia about 20 minutes ago,” Robichaud said.

Although at-risk areas in Atlantic Canada are less populated than BC, there are still people at risk when fast-moving water accumulates.

“We’ve had some water rescue. The water came pretty fast this afternoon in parts of Nova Scotia at Trailer Park. [that] Firefighters had to go in boats and rescue people, ”Robichaud said.

Rain continues overnight in Nova Scotia and “tomorrow will affect Newfoundland all day.”

“It won’t be until Thursday before we can start to improve a little bit in all the areas it really affects,” he said.

Robichaud said that during the transition from summer to autumn to winter, there is a huge difference in climate.

“Of course we are seeing two major rainfall events in a week on the opposite ends of the coast.”

But while it is not possible to track any weather event in particular, it has been shown to exacerbate extreme weather events, giving insight into how much Canada has been hit recently.

Researchers are trying to investigate how strong the link between these types of events and climate change is, Robichaud said, adding that warmer climates have more water and thus more severe rainfall.

“We are getting more of these in terms of climate change, especially these heavy rainfall events,” he said.

The fight for BC is not over – there is a high rainfall forecast for the province that is still struggling to rebuild after highways and flooded towns. A system that goes their way is much smaller, but after a few days, a “more significant” system may hit the area again.

“We are getting some more storms here as we enter late November and early December,” Robichaud said.
