Idaho detectives focus on video, Hyundai Elantra in college murder probe


Idaho investigators are searching for surveillance footage in the small town of Moscow as they urge the public to continue to provide tips about a white Hyundai Elantra that was near an off-campus rental home when four University of Idaho students were killed.

The six hours of footage was taken from a local gas station about half a mile from the crime scene, the clerk said.

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, her best friend Madison Mogen, 21, Hana Kernodle, 20, and her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, 20, were arrested between 3 and 4 a.m. on Nov. 13 at three King Road was stabbed to death in a multi-storey house.

Investigators also obtained videos from the corner club where Mogen and Goncalves hung out the night before the slaying, according to the bartender.

“Police are still looking for information on the 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra,” the Moscow Police Department said in a Dec. 12 press release. “Tips and leads prompted detectives to seek additional information regarding the location of this vehicle in the vicinity of a King Road residence in the early hours of November 13.”

The investigation has gone into its fourth week and no suspects have been released.

Police were inundated with tips last week after expressing interest in the Hyundai and had to refer calls to a national FBI call center, officials said.

Detectives want to speak to a passenger or passengers who they believe “may have important information” in the case.

Police are also looking for any surveillance video from businesses or residences within about 1 mile of the crime scene between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Nov. 13.

Lanier added in a Dec. 12 video update that police already have an “army of analysts” sifting through the submitted videos.

Police are urging the community to be vigilant. “We always have to keep our heads up, stick to the light trails, and when possible, walk as a group,” Lanier said. “We remain 100% committed to solving this crime.”
