Instagram is said to be down for thousands of users across the United States, with the outages concentrated in New York City, followed by Los Angeles and Washington DC.
According to Drop detectorReports of outages began to escalate at around 4:10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Monday and rose to nearly 6,000 within an hour.
The UK recorded around 3,000 reports during roughly the same period, with blackouts mainly in London.
The #instagramdown hashtag began circulating on Twitter as users migrated to the tech competitor pending a fix.
Some users have reported error messages telling them to “try again later”.
“We are limiting how often you can do certain things on Instagram to protect our community,” one of the messages noted.
The number of user reports on Monday night is only a fraction of the major blackouts in April, when millions of Instagram users around the world, as well as Facebook users, were unable to load an email. images or create or download publications.
There has been no indication of when service could be restored.
