Insurance covers the Covid test at home from Saturday. How to get free tests or refunds

Americans with health insurance can get eight COVID-19 tests at home, thanks to a new need.

From Saturday, private health plans are required to cover up to $ 12 per person over-the-counter tests. Customers can purchase test kits at no cost or submit refunds from the insurance company.

Under the scheme, a family of five can reimburse 40 exams per month. PCR tests and rapid tests, ordered or administered by healthcare providers, will continue to cover insurance coverage completely without any limitations.

President Joe Biden announced a federal requirement for insurance companies in December and will begin Jan. 15, officials said Monday.

“This is part of our overall strategy to increase access to easy-to-use, in-home tests at no cost,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement Monday. “By requiring private health plans to cover people’s home tests, we are further expanding the ability of Americans to get tests free when they need them.”

The administration is trying to encourage private insurers to cover inspections upfront and without a cumbersome reimbursement process.

Health insurance industry groups have said that insurers carry out the administration mandate, but warned consumers that this is not as easy as flipping the switch.

Health Care Service Corporation or HCSC, an independent licensee of Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, said that if members use the pharmacy on its Pharmacy Benefit Manager’s network, Prime, “they do not need to file a separate claim for reimbursement.”

Aetna updated its website on Friday with frequently asked questions about the new requirement. More information on how members can file claims will soon be available, the site said.

Biden plans free COVID tests

The Biden administration launches a website where Americans can order free COVID-19 tests on Wednesday, January 19th.

An official who informed reporters said the tests, which were part of the administration’s purchase of 500 million tests last month, will be mailed to homes within seven to 12 days to help tackle a record surge in infections.

Biden announced earlier this week that the administration would double its mandate with the purchase of an additional 500 million home-grown COVID-19 tests amid a shortage of tests nationwide, leading to long lines at test sites and overcrowded hospitals.
