Iowa’s Teacher of the Year visits Sioux City Career Academy

Sex City () – Inspiring the next generation of teachers. That’s what Iowa’s 2022 “Teacher of the Year” did Tuesday at Career Academy in Sioux City.

Sarah Russell teaches social studies at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa. She teaches classes in AP Geography and Modern US History. Although he has spent the past year touring the state as an appointee of Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Connor Moon described Russell as saying, “My takeaway was building the whole relationship as a parent and a student can help you support and get to know your students in the classroom so that you Help them grow as a person.” Visit the Career Academy in downtown Sioux City.

During the visit, Russell spoke to prospective teaching students about lasting relationships and the stark realities of teaching today.

“I just think it’s very important for us to give students as much real-world experience as possible. So they can start exploring careers and decide what they want. do and what they’re not suited for. And so this opportunity is just extraordinary,” Russell said.

Russell has spent the year traveling the state: promoting education in Iowa and meeting with other teachers to hone their skills. Here’s what Russell said when asked about Iowa’s new “school choice” law, a hot topic in the education community.

“Really my job in this role is to, you know, celebrate education across the state and celebrate what our teachers and students are doing. And so that’s really my focus,” he said. said

His tour stop made a big impact on at least one other senior student, who plans to become a teacher himself.

“And it was really inspiring because she’s such an open book. And it was really cool to hear her talk. And it was just a great experience,” Addison Jung said.

The 2023 Iowa Teacher of the Year is Crystal Colbert of Mitchellville. There are two finalists from Siouxland, Lori Brandt, a special education teacher in the Sioux Center Community School District, and Levi Letsche, a high school math teacher in the Sheldon Community School District.
