Israeli officials are warning that the Pfizer vaccine is “significantly less” effective against the delta version of the coronavirus, the strain first seen in India that now accounts for 31 percent of cases in the US.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, “We don’t know to what extent the vaccine helps, but it is very little.”
The shot is still preventing people from becoming seriously ill in Israel, where more than 60 percent of the population has received a jab. Only 1.6 percent have become seriously ill, compared to 4 percent in pre-wax wave cases.
There are also growing concerns about the effectiveness of vaccines against the beta version, which was first identified in South Africa.
The UK will require all travelers from France – including full vaccinations – to be isolated for 10 days when they return because the beta version is spreading there, though mostly in the Indian Ocean regions of Reunion and Mayotte .
