Director James Cameron has said that Avatar: The Last Airbender is a feminist film that features images of female empowerment not found in the Marvel or DC superhero franchises.
“Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel are all these other amazing women who come forward, but they’re not mothers and they’re not pregnant when they’re fighting evil,” Cameron said.
The acclaimed director said that it was a conscious choice to portray diverse female characters in the film who have incredible feats and go into battle carrying their child.

“Everyone is always talking about empowering women,” Cameron said. “But what’s the big part of a woman’s life that we men don’t get to experience? And I thought, ‘Well, if you really want to go down the rabbit hole of female empowerment, come on.’ A six-month pregnant female warrior enters the battle. This doesn’t happen in our society – probably hasn’t for hundreds of years. But I guarantee you, women had to fight to survive and protect their children, and it didn’t matter if they got pregnant.”
The famous director added that pregnant women are more athletic and capable than people in Western culture admit. He also argued that he wanted to destroy “real boundaries” in society and used images of pregnant women or the “last bastion” to show the danger of conflict.
Cameron, who has admitted to liking superhero movies, recently slammed Marvel and DC for their lack of serious connections in an interview with The New York Times in October.

“When I see these big, big movies — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — no matter how old the characters are, they act like they’re in college,” Cameron said. “They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never turn off their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us strength and love and purpose? These characters don’t experience that and I “I don’t think that’s the way to make movies.”
Cameron recently came under fire when he suggested that testosterone was a “toxin” that men needed to get out of their systems while promoting the new film Avatar.
“I’m always thinking [testosterone] as a toxin, you have to slowly get it out of your system,” he said. “I wasn’t doing a lot of the things I used to do — careers and just the risks you take as a wild, testosterone-intoxicated youth. person.”
The long-awaited sequel to 2009’s Avatar hits theaters on December 16. Cameron plans to release a third film in 2024 and a fourth in 2026. Scripts for future films have already been written.
In addition to Avatar, Cameron has directed several other films with female leads, such as Terminator, Aliens, and Titanic.
