JBS USA, the U.S. subsidiary of Brazilian meat processing company JBS SA, will pay hackers $ 11 million after a cyber attack halted operations in the United States, Canada and Australia.
“It was a very difficult decision for our company and for me personally,” JBS USA CEO Andre Nogueira said in a statement. “However, we felt that this decision needed to be made to avoid the potential risk to our customers.”
Wall Street Journal JBS reported that the payment was made in bitcoin.
According to the butcher, the cyber-attack has weakened so much that it has threatened to disrupt food supply chains around the world and raise food prices. The attack also forced the company to cancel worker exchanges at meat factories in the U.S. and Canada last week.
lbl JBS USA and Pilgrims Pride Corp – a U.S.-based chicken company owned primarily by JBS – lost a day’s worth of food due to the cyberattack.
JBS produces almost a quarter of the beef in America.
A source familiar with the matter said that the hacker group REvil / Sodinokibi was behind the cyber attack on JBS. The group is also in contact with Russia.
