Jerry Jones details ‘problem’ with Cowboys signing Odell Beckham

There’s no doubt Jerry Jones would love to see Odell Beckham Jr. in a Cowboys uniform, but the wide receiver’s health remains an issue as he winds down his mini-free agency.

Speaking on 105.3 “The Fan” on Tuesday, Jones talked about Beckham’s visit to Dallas, which included an experience on the court with playmakers Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs during Monday’s Mavericks game. Like his previous visits with the Giants and Bills, Beckham didn’t work out for the Cowboys because he was sidelined for about 10 months from a torn ACL he suffered in the Super Bowl in February.

Given the situation, Jones spoke about his confidence level in releasing a player he hasn’t seen in a game since the injury.

“I’m not confident at all,” Jones said. via Mark Lane of WFAA Sports, per Pro Football Talk. “So that’s the issue. Now we all understand that the problem of health, the question of availability is always here. It’s pretty obvious and refers to the injury he suffered last year in the Super Bowl. We have achieved a good result in this regard. We’ve had a great read about his career.”

Beckham, 30, scored a goal for the Rams before going down with an injury at the start of the Super Bowl in February. Los Angeles held on and beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20.

Jones, whose Cowboys are heavily involved in the NFC playoff race, added how much the Dallas brass have to work on analyzing Beckham’s resume.

“This draft pick is not like you. You’ve got a lot of history here and you’re not only clear and it works, but you can also love any health issues. So we have to go into all of this with our eyes wide open and it needs to be resolved and that’s when you’ll know if you can get a deal or not,” Jones said.

The Cowboys have been the most vocal in their pursuit of Beckham’s services, and Mavericks fans campaigned on their behalf Monday night.

Mavericks fans chanted “OBJ” in the third quarter during Dallas’ 130-111 win over the Phoenix Suns.

A former first-round pick, Beckham spent the first five seasons of his career with the Giants, who drafted him 12th overall in 2014. After five years, he was traded to Cleveland and parted ways with the Browns last November. He spent the second half of the 2021 season with the Rams.
