Kevin McCarthy: The president was trying to please the members and the members. Excited about it. But one thing the president was saying was something he knew wasn’t true. I spent only an hour with him. I have said it many times before. Social Security and Medicare are off the table. He tries to use it for political maneuvering. But one thing we need is that we need to be smart. He is trying to play politics with the debt ceiling by lying about our position and not negotiating. I want to be responsible. I want to be wise. I want to sit down and solve this problem. Because look, the Democrats raised the highest debt ceiling ever and they blew it in no time and now they want to go back on it. We need to be smart. Don’t take the bait. Stand with the American people in what we want to do, stop the runaway spending that the president is spending so much on. Democrats increased discretionary spending by 30 percent. There are many places where we have savings to make government more accountable and actually on the path to balance.
