Liz Cheney launches anti-Trump ad ahead of former president’s CNN town hall

Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming congresswoman who was ousted from her leadership role in the Republican Party, launched an ad attacking former President Donald Trump ahead of his town hall on CNN.

The ad, which is airing on Fox News, features Cheney speaking directly to the camera about the dangers of Trump’s lies about the 2020 presidential election and his role in the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“We must speak the truth. Our election was not stolen, and America has not failed,” Cheney says in the ad. “I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.”

The ad ends with a message encouraging viewers to visit Cheney’s website to learn more about her efforts to protect the Constitution and the rule of law.

Cheney has been a vocal critic of Trump and his supporters in the Republican Party, which led to her ousting as the party’s conference chair in May 2021. She has since continued to speak out against Trump’s lies and the dangers they pose to American democracy.

Trump’s town hall on CNN, scheduled for July 1st, comes as he continues to spread falsehoods about the 2020 election and his role in the events of January 6th. The event is expected to be highly watched, as it will be Trump’s first televised town hall since leaving office.

Cheney’s ad is part of her ongoing efforts to push back against Trump’s influence in the Republican Party and to promote her own vision for the future of the party, which she believes should be rooted in conservative values and respect for the Constitution.

As the GOP continues to grapple with its identity in the post-Trump era, Cheney’s message of truth-telling and fidelity to the rule of law may resonate with those Republicans who are wary of Trump’s influence and the direction he is leading the party.
