Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is again blaming the root causes of the surge in migrants in Central America and the southern border – “increased thirst for relief” by those traveling north.
Mayorkas was asked Yahoo News Why do they think the border crossing has been so high for 20 years, and has moved on to the “root cause” explanation that the administration admired — as well as the Trump administration’s blame for the closure of asylum routes.

“I think that the pieces of so many different doctrines put together will provide a very compelling answer,” the secretary said.
“The decline in economies, the rise in violence, the downturn in the economies has intensified the impact of the Kovid-19 pandemic, the suppression of any humanitarian relief and thirst for the past several years. For the relief of so many different people,” he said. “I think the combination of factors contributes to the rise in migration we’ve seen.”
More than 200,000 immigrant encounters occurred in July and August, and the administration faced a surge of Haitian immigrants in September, leaving more than 15,000 migrants under the Del Rio International Bridge. Republicans have beaten the Biden administration for its policies, saying the withdrawal of Trump-era border protections is a surge.
Border crisis bureaucracies, like immigration numbers, keep communities rolling
Mayorcas is reported to have warned that the US may see a new rise in the border if the Trump-era Title 42 public health protections — the Kovid-19 epidemic — allow immigrants to evacuate quickly.
The administration is fighting in court to keep a limited application for Title 42 – in August, only 19% of immigrant families were removed under orders.
However, the Mayorcas shied away from policy, which provoked left-wing immigration activists, repeating the Trump-era claim that the Title 42 mandate was a public health authority, not an immigration authority.
“And the Title 42 authority is the public health authority. “But we treat it as a public health emergency, as mandated by the Centers for Disease Control.”
