Mexican citizen arrested for record-breaking drug trafficking in California


US Customs and Border Protection on Thursday seized a record-breaking seizure of fentanyl and methamphetamine, striking a Mexican citizen who was trying to smuggle drugs into the US inside the truck, officials said.

Carlos Martin Quintana-Arias of Mexico was driving a 2009 Kenworth tractor pulling a 1996 Stogg trailer when he applied to the US Attorney’s office at 8:20 pm at the Commercial Port of Entry, Ote Mesa, California. Southern District of California He said in a news release.

Officials said the truck’s manifest trailer indicated that the body parts of the automobile were holding, while the X-ray machine detected abnormalities that required further inspection.

The drug sniffing dog then alerted CBP officers to the back door of the trailer. Officers said there were 6,266 packages of drugs in “some vehicles” parts on further inspection.

According to officials, 6,106 packages of methamphetamine were found – about 17,584 pounds – while the other 160 packages contained fentanyl, which weighs about 388 pounds.

CBP has confirmed that drug seizures are the biggest busts in the US for both meth and fentanyl this year and last year, prosecutors said.

“This is a shocking seizure that demonstrates the scope of our current fight against the mass production of methamphetamine and fentanyl,” US Attorney Randy Grossman thanked all the agencies involved in the bust.

Quintana-Arias is facing federal drug charges and was arraigned Friday. An arrest hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.
