Mike White has the Jets filling in for the injured ach Wack Wilson

At least the Jets ’backup quarterback now has the NFL regular-season tin experience.

One positive aspect the Jets can take away from Sunday afternoon is that even though they clearly don’t want Mike White to come into the game.

After rookie Wilson sustained a right knee injury in the second quarter, White was forced into duty with a 54-13 loss to the Patriots at Gillette Stadium.

“First you think about your friend on the ground, worrying about his well-being and how he continues,” White said. “Now you understand, ‘Well, it’s my shot to get there. Help me execute the crime.’ ”

White did well, all things considered, throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass on his first passing attempt to Corey Davis and moving the ball reasonably well. In all, White completed 20 of 32 passes for 202 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He got rid of the ball quickly, spread it around and fired only once. Vail missed a few passes, including the Kyle Duggar interception, when he tossed open-taker Ryan Griffin.

“It’s great,” Wilson said of White’s performance. “I told him, ‘It’s a difficult situation to step in there.’ He hasn’t taken much reps and obviously, he hasn’t played much in a live game before. But I thought he played very well.

The 26-year-old White played for South Florida and Western Kentucky in college and was named a Cowboys fifth-round pick in 2018. The following year, he signed with the Jets’ practice squad and remains in the franchise. Nevertheless, White did not appear in the regular-season game until Sunday, although he was active for four games last year.

“I think there are things to build on personally as a whole. I think we did some good things offensively,” White said. “We executed, we moved the ball down. Like any game, there are plays that you want to take back. I think the most important thing is to go to the film room tomorrow and fix those things, build on that, not let us beat us twice today.

It is uncertain whether White will start the Jets’ next game against the Bengals at MetLife Stadium. Wilson will undergo an MRI test for a PCL injury on Monday. Wilson said he heard a pop in his right knee and that it didn’t feel overly stable.

Wilson may miss the Jets’ next two games, because next Sunday, they will play again next Thursday against the Colts.

White may get more experience in the coming weeks.
