What is meningitis?

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

It can affect anyone, but is more common in infants, young children, teens and young adults.

Meningitis is very serious if not treated quickly.

It can cause deadly blood poisoning (septicemia) and cause permanent damage to the brain or nerves.

There are several vaccinations available that provide some protection against meningitis.

Meningitis is usually caused by bacterial or viral infections.

Bacterial meningitis is rare but more serious than viral meningitis.

Meningitis is usually caught by those who carry these viruses or bacteria in their nose or throat but do not get themselves sick.

It can also catch people with meningitis, but it is less common.

He told the Radio Times: ‘When I walked into my first job interview and the guy said to me, “Why didn’t you tell me you were black?”, I replied, “Why didn’t you tell me you were white?”

Then, when television came along, it took me ten years to take a break as an on-screen fitness coach.

‘Whenever I went into the studio, the boys would say, “Look, for a white woman with two kids, a black man on TV will never work.” But I kept on pretending. ‘
