British journalists say that the trailer for a Netflix documentary on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle contains a lot of false footage aimed at portraying the couple as victims of an aggressive press.
Prince Harry and Markle stepped down as senior members of the royal family in January 2020, partly due to a media backlash. Markle describes how she was hounded by the press shortly after her wedding to the prince in the Harry and Meghan trailer, with a series of photos and clips of chase cameramen in the background. However, journalists who follow the couple closely say that these pictures are not what they seem.
PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE TALK RACE IN NEW NETFLIX TRAILER
Robert Jobson, the royal editor of the London Evening Standard newspaper, objected to the trailer’s use of a back-to-back photo of the couple on a balcony during a trip to Cape Town, South Africa. Jobson said he was “there” when the photo was taken and that the angle was an “accredited position” that Harry and Meghan agreed to.
“Used this photo @Netflix and for Harry and Meghan to suggest a press raid is absolutely absurd,” Jobson said. “This is from an accredited pool at Archbishop Tutu’s residence in Cape Town. There were only 3 people in the accredited position. H & M agreed with this position. I was there.”

“No, it’s just a misperception of reality,” he added in a follow-up tweet, responding to claims the scene was “set up”. “We covered the official visit, where they were taxpayer-funded protection and all the trappings. It’s just nonsense. The palace wasn’t part of some ‘set-up’. No conspiracy here, lies and misuse of photos from swimming pools.”
ITV NEWS royal editor Chris Shipp said Jobson had made a “correct point” and said film crews were allowed there and it was “not a media scrum”.
Jobson shared a second photo from the couple’s trip to Cape Town, showing there was “no intrusion” by the press.

Another picture showing Prince Harry and Markle being chased by the paparazzi turned out to be an old photo from the London premiere of Harry Potter – taken a few years before the couple met.
According to The Sun photographer Doug Seeburg, there were no members of the British royal family at the wedding and instead cameras were focused on the cast of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two in Trafalgar Square. London.
“I remember going to the premiere,” Seeburg said. “It was a huge event. Crowds and crowds of fans came out in the rain and camped out overnight to see the cast. There were no members of the royal family there.”
