New York is no longer a ‘Fun City’

“Where there is no vision, the people are arbitrary, but the law-keeper is happy.” (Proverbs 29:18)

It didn’t last long. The optimism around New York City’s new mayor, Eric Adams, is quickly eroding due to a number of self-inflicted political injuries.

Beneficiaries of NYC bail reform have been remanded for crimes at a higher rate than city plans

Adams has approved a new policy that would allow 800,000 non-citizens to vote in municipal elections. Republicans have sued that the law violates the state constitution. It also sets a bad precedent. Belief in election results is already declining and the trend will continue if this law is upheld.

Mayor Adams has named his brother as deputy NYPD commissioner. He says his brother helps protect him from the “rise of white supremacy” in the city. I’m sorry? Whites are a minority in New York City. In addition to the mayor and his brother blacks, the new police commissioner, Keechant Sewell, is also a woman. Manhattan’s new district attorney, Alvin Bragg, is black. More about him in a moment.

Then there’s the city council. Last fall, according to Gothamist.com, among the runaways, “the first Muslim woman, the first South Asian member, the first openly gay black woman, seven foreign-born New Yorkers, and more women and people of color are ready to be elected. On the road to being the most diverse and most leftist. ” It is. The new council president is also a black woman.

From such a profile one would look in vain to detect “white supremacy”.

Alvin Bragg was sparked by criticism when he announced a “get out of jail” free card for people committing certain criminal acts. Business leaders are meeting them with hopes of changing their minds. Crime in the city is rising rapidly and adding fears and restrictions to the epidemic is a good case for them to make, which has hurt many businesses. Visitors are less likely to feel New York is unsafe.

A recent crime has helped to focus on the effects of loose law enforcement. A 19-year-old cashier at Burger King in East Harlem was shot and killed after giving $ 100 to a burglar from his cash drawer. News reports say that a young woman named Crystal Baron-Neeves told her mother that it was unsafe to work there because she feared “50 homeless people outside.” Her mother insisted on going to work anyway and now, The Daily Mail reported, understandably “feeling guilty.”

Mayor Adams responded to the murder by inviting a familiar progressive line on the need to end “gun violence.” The brave attitude of crime and the message sent to criminals in New York and other cities where progressives are in charge is that they can escape from what once led to their arrest, prosecution and imprisonment.

It should go without saying that billionaire George Soros has contributed millions to the campaigns of progressive sheriffs across the country — but mostly the media. Such out-of-pocket money should be illegal even if it is torn down by a nonprofit in America, but money for politicians is like blood for Dracula and it takes public outrage to ban it.

First impressions are crucial for anyone new to the office (considering President Biden’s unpredictable progressive policies, resulting in a rapid decline in his approval numbers). The first impressions made by Mayor Adams are not great. New York was once known as “Fun City.” It is rapidly darkening and, as in the 1970s, it is a much more dangerous place to visit and live.
