TeleRadioStereo (via Sport Witness) reports that Newcastle now have a ‘strong interest’ in the 32-year-old center-back.
The Magpies, however, face a tough test of securing Smalling’s services, who are ‘not entirely convinced’ by moving to Newcastle.
Smalling, who is under contract until 2023, is considered a crucial first-team player for Roma manager Jose Mourinho.
The former England international spent a decade at Old Trafford and made 323 appearances for the Red Devils.
During his stay at United, Smalling lifted two Premier League titles, the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
The former Fulham player struggled to get regular playing time by the end of his United career and was initially shipped to Roma in 2019 on a loan deal.
Roma confirmed Smalling’s move in 2020 after agreeing to an initial £ 13.6m deal with United.
Lille Defender Sven Boatman can concentrate on keeping Newcastle Smalling safe after negotiations on the deal are broken.
Boatman was considered Newcastle’s No. 1 defensive target in January, but the Magpies were unable to sign the 22-year-old Dutchman because of Lille’s assessment.
Newcastle have been linked with Diego Carlos of Sevilla, Marcos Seneci of Feyenoord and Benoit Badiou of Monaco as potential defensive transfer targets.
