Nicole Kidman recalls studying Lucille Ball for ‘Being the Ricardos’ biopic: ‘It’s my obsession’

Nicole Kidman was committed to taking on the late queen of comedy.

Following the appearance of the upcoming biopic “Being the Ricardos” in Los Angeles on Saturday, the actress discussed her absurd way of recreating scenes from Lucille Ball from “I Love Lucy.”

She made sure she perfected the ball movement on the screen as she became obsessed with the Academy Award winner when it came to analyzing episodes of the classic TV series.

“I studied and learned them,” the 54-year-old quoted People magazine. “It went into my body and memory.”

“My obsession is to get it perfectly accurate,” she continued. “It is [writer/director Aaron Sorkin’s] The obsession with portraying this man – what is behind the creation of Lucy Ricardo and who is the woman behind this role? “

Kidman pointed out how he shot the traditional grape-stamping scene from the season 5 episode of “Lucia’s Italian Movie.” Starr said he used real grapes on the set and that he was shooting for fun most of the time because he had so much fun.

Her husband Desi Arnaz, who played Ball and Javier Bardem, was “threatened by shocking personal accusations, political smears and cultural taboos” during the one-week filming of “Being the Ricardos.” The couple married in 1940 and left it in 1960.

Arnaz died in 1986 at the age of 69. Ball died in 1989 at the age of 77.

In August, the couple’s daughter Lucy Arnaz Kidman and Bardem, 52, were hailed as “really great performers” who were “very classy and first class” when they portrayed their parents. He especially praised Kidman for his “wonderful work.”

“Yet the two days I saw them were minor flashbacks [Nicole] Lucy was playing in the late 30s and early 40s, ”the 70-year-old said Life in Palm Springs. “She wasn’t Lucy of Lucy Ricardo fame yet, so it was a little different.”

“And I know she understands it, so it will be different,” Arnaz continued. “But boy, what she did was dazzling. She’s got such balance and class.”

The performer also said that he knows that many of his mother’s fans are surprised by her role as Kidman. However, Lucy said she was not distracted by the comments.

“There are no look-alikes,” he explained. “I mean, nobody played the role because they look like someone. They’re amazing performers, actors and they can capture the essence of what’s written in this script. And Aaron was adamant about it and thank God. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product.”

Still, Lucy confessed to the outlet that there were “a few scenes” she did not include the 60-year-old Sorkin in the movie. Lucy did not provide specific details about the scenes in question.

“I couldn’t get my way out and get them out, but they weren’t accurate,” he said. “And I thought, ‘That shouldn’t be there because it never happened. That’s not true.’ And this is just a theatrical license, it’s not true and the day they filmed the scene, the sprinklers went out on set and destroyed the entire set.

Desi stars as “I Love Lucy” bandleader Ricky Ricardo, Ball’s wife Lucy, and William Frawley and Vivian Vance as neighboring landlords Fred and Ethel Mertz. It ran from 1951 to 1961 and is still seen around the world in replays.
